The Clarinet Sonata (1956) by William Manias is a work of craftsmanship and logical structure. It has three movements: Allegretto, Lento, Allegrello. Kenneth Leighton's Quartet, though written in the composer's own idiom, reveals a sympathy with the string quartets of Bartok. It has four movements, of which the second is a slow march and the fourth an epilogue.
