Between 1803 and 1814 the Continent was frustratingly closed to the English. But with Napoleon safe on Elba they were free to indulge again the deeply ingrained habit of Italian travel. His escape, the speaker suggests, put an end to an interlude that was in some ways the Indian Summer of the Grand Tour.
