Kenneth Essex, who was born in 1915, studied at Morley College and later with Alan Bush. His Wind Quintet was written in 1940, and was given its first performance in a concert of the Society for the Promotion of New Music five years later. It is in four movements: Allegro moderaio, Andante pastorale, Scherzo (Allegretto giocoso), and Spiriloso.
Racine Fricker, whose second symphony was given at the Festival of the International Society for Contemporary Music held in Oslo this year, completed his Wind Quintet in 1947. Awarded the Clements Memorial Prize that year, it was first performed in a concert in the Third Programme in 1948 by the Dennis Bran Wind Quintet, and was the first of his works to bring him to the notice of the public. It is in four movements: Moderato leading to Allegro moderato, Badinerte and Musette, Canonic Variations, and Vivo (D. C.)
