Ernst Eichner, who was born at Mannheim in 1740, became a musician at the court of Friedrich Wilhelm II at Potsdam, where he died in 1777. This symphony, the first of a set of three published in Paris, is receiving its first broadcast performance in this country. There are three movements: Allegro, Andante un poco allegro, and Presto.

Sullivan's Cello Concerto is one of his earlier works, written when he was twenty-four, shortly after he had been appointed a professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music. He wrote on the score: 'Composed expressly for, and dedicated to, Signor Alfredo Piatti, London, November 20, 1866.' Piatti gave the first performance four days later at a Crystal Palace Concert. The cadenzas Wiliiam Pleeth is to play tonight were written specially by Charles Mackerras. D.C.
