Talk by Xan Fielding

One of the fiercest battles of the Greek War of Independence was fought on May 17, 1828, in a small plain on the south coast of Crete. Near the Venetian fortress of Frangocastello, 385 Greeks led by the Epirote general Hadjimichalis were attacked by a Turkish force nine thousand strong and slaughtered to the last man. Since then their ghosts have haunted the scene. This phantom army is said to materialise at dawn on each anniversary of the battle. Xan Fielding, who spent this year's anniversary on the spot, describes his investigations into the phenomenon.
