The young Italian novelist Cesare Pavese , author of ' The Moon and the Bonfire,' who committed suicide two years ago, was considered a characteristic representative of the ' tough,' left-wing school of writing. However, his diaries (recently published in Italy) reveal a different man, and allow the speaker-a novelist himself-to draw some general conclusions about the Italian writer's relation to politics.
