Trio in D (Serenade), Op. 8 played by the Philharmonic String Trio:
David Martin (violin)
Max Gilbert (viola)
James Whitehead (cello)
This Serenade, written in 1797, consists of seven movements. The first is a march, the third a minuet and trio. the fifth an allegretto in the style of a polonaise, and the sixth a theme with vanations. These lead to a return of the opening march.
In 1803 there was published an arrangement of the Serenade for piano and viola. This was given the title Notlurno and the opus number 42. though it has never been established that Beethoven was responsible for the arrangement. On Saturday in the Third Programme the work will be played in this form, as edited recently by William Primrose .H.R.
