The contemporary problem of soil erosion is one that for centuries threatened the maritime Republic of Venice. Silt from the mainland constantly endangered the waterways on which its sea-power was based. Hugh Nicol, Professor of Chemistry at the West of Scotland Agricultural College, describes the successful methods used by the Republic to combat this menace.
