Schumann's Symphony in D minor exists in two forms. The one which is widely known, and which was given in the Third Programme last night, is the revi.sed version published in 1851 as Symphony No. 4. In its original form, however, it was written ten years earlier, immediately after the first symphony. This original version, to be heard tonight, was published in 1891 at the suggestion of Brahms. The music is very similar, the difference being largely a matter of orchestration: the persistent doubling which mars the second version is absent from the first.
Stravinsky's Symphony in C was written in response to a commission to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who played it for rhe first time in November 1940. Three years later it was given in this country at a BBC concert. The symphony consists of four movements
