In a letter written from Dorchester in 1927. while he was on a visit to Thomas Hardy, Gustav Hoist told a friend that
' Imogen has won a scholarship for composition at the R.C.M.-the sort that I got in 1895.' Imogen Holst , who was then twenty years old, has followed up this early success by gaining an enviable reputation as a teacher, composer, and author (she has written two admirable books about her father). The work 10 be played tonight was written for the Robert Masters String Trio when they and the composer were working together at Dartington Hall, Devon, nine years ago. There are four movements: Andante, Presto, Poco lento, and Andante.
