In this talk the speaker discusses the suggestion that the phenomena of precognition have some bearing on the freedom of the will and that they show that causation can work backwards in time. He argues that these mistaken ideas arise from the conscious or unconscious use of an inappropriate explanatory model.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, the solitary and outstanding figure in Dutch music of the sixteenth century, is the least known of all the great composers of the go:den age of polyphony. Born in 1562, a generation later than Patestrina, Lassus, Victoria, and Byrd, he looked back to the old contrapuntal tradition which he had learned from the writings of the Italian theorist Zarhno, and forward to the new homophonic style of the seventeenth century. The former aspecr predominates in his Psalms of David (which he set in their entirety) and the latter in his French and Italian madrigals. He was a brilliant harpsichordist and organist (crowds gathered to hear him play at the Old Church. Amsterdam), and was a pioneer in developing from the old keyboard chansons and variations the new form of the fugue, which passed through the North German school of organists and found its consummation in Bach.
