The cathedral church of St. Nicholas in Newcastle-upon-Tyne inherits the earliest traditions of Christianity in the North, recalling the days of King Oswald and St. Aidan, first Bishop of Lindisfarne in 635; though Danish invasions in the ninth century caused the bishopric to be moved 10 Durham.
