(The recorded broadcast of Sept. 16 in the West of England Home Service) On September 16, 1886, in the parish of Hordle in Hampshire, Mary Ann Girling died. She was the ' Mother ' of a religious community known as the Shakers. Tonight Laurence Housman describes her life and the scene at the graveside when her followers watched for her to rise from the dead.
