Talk by Sheppard Frere , F.S.A.
The Roman city of Durovernum, founded shortly after the invasion of Britain in the time of the Emperor Claudius, has been buried for centuries under the medieval and modern town of Canterbury. Enemy bombing, however, laid bare much of the site, and since 1944 archaeologists have been digging among the ruins of modern and ancient Canterbury to try to piece together the history of the city from its foundation. In this talk Sheppard Frere, archaeologist in charge of the excavations, tells of the rewards, difficulties, and results of the work.
