' A Study of History is Professor Toynbee's magnum opus on the nature of historical development. The first six volumes appeared before the war and were summarised in a one-volume work published in 1946. This work made an important impression in Europe, and has been a best-seller in America for many months. Professor Toynbee is now engaged on the final three volumes of the general scheme
