St. George, the man, is little known, but the legend of his fight with the dragon has fired the imagination not only of poets and scholars, but of the ordinary man, who sees in the struggle not merely a conflict between man and beast, but the never-ending battle between good and evil. The play you will hear this afternoon tells of this fight, and of the saint's subsequent martyrdom.

THE JOSEPH LEWIS ORCHESTRA

Soon after Joseph Lewis left the BBC staff last year he formed an orchestra of his own, which has already given several highly successful broadcasts. The Joseph Lewis Orchestra, which consists of twenty-one players, might well be called an all-star combination. The leader is that fine violinist Daniel Melsa , who for some years was leader of the BBC Empire Orchestra, and one of his colleagues is F. Weist Hill, who was also for some years a sub-leader of the BBC Orchestra. The orchestra includes George Yewe Dyer (principal viola), Michael Collins (principal cello), Edward Walker (principal flute), Reginald Kell (principal clarinet), Gilbert Vinter (principal bassoon), Edward Chapman (principal horn), George Eskdale (principal trumpet), Sam Geldard (percussion), and the pianist is Wilfrid Parry. 
Joe Lewis has set out to specialise in programmes of British music, chiefly of the lighter kind, of which the present programme is an excellent example. One of the outstanding numbers is Haydn Wood 's Suite ' Frescoes ', which is based on three panels executed by the well-known artist, Anna Zinkeisen.
