A Pianoforte Recital by Maria Donska
The early history of Beethoven's ' Appassionata ' Sonata is interesting. It appears that one day in 1804 Beethoven and his pupil, Ferdinand Ries , went for a long country walk, during which Beethoven, as usual, was lost in thought. Ries has left it on record that throughout this walk Beethoven hummed and occasionally howled without, however, singing any recognisable notes. When Ries asked him what the music was that he had in mind, he replied : ' The theme for the final Allegro of the Sonata (in F minor, Op. 57) has occurred to me.' Ries goes on to say that ' when we entered the room he ran to the piano without taking off his hat. I sat down in a corner and soon he had forgotten me. Then he raged on the keys for at least an hour, developing the new Finale of this sonata (which appeared in 1807) in the beautiful form we know. At last he rose, was surprised, to see me still there, and said: "I cannot give you a lesson today; I still have work to do." '
