Although Haydn Wood is generally known as a composer of light, orchestral music and ballad songs, he has also written several ambitious works, including a Fantasy String Quartet, which gained a prize in a Cobbett Competition, Variations for Orchestra, a Pianoforte Concerto, and a Symphony. The Violin Concerto was composed about two years ago : the first movement is classical in form, the expressive slow movement is based on three themes, and the finale is light in texture and delicately scored. Towards the end there is a short reference to the first movement which gives a feeling of unity to the whole work.
