Symphonic Dances from the Burlesque 
Opera, The Tigers... Havergal Brian i. Gargoyles; 2. Wild Horsemen 
THESE two Symphonic Dances are from 
The Tigers, 'a burlesque opera with a Prologue and Three Acts. ' Gargoyles is one of the two Symphonic Dances which form the introduction to the Third Act. Here is the printed description of what takes place : ' By very imperceptible degrees the stage represents the tower of a cathedral surrounded by fantastic grinning gargoyles, whose visages vary, suggesting sometimes a less malicious grin or even an expression of kindness. This is but an illusion cast by the slowly enveloping light which is gradually showing up the complete outlines of the fantastic battalion. From the centre rises a gargoyle more fantastic than the rest.... He raises his hand to and signals to the gargoyles. One by one they join him until all the gargoyles have left their stations in the stonework, and with the griffin at their head the gargoyles commence their nightly and ghostly march.' 
' Wild Horsemen ' forms the Second 
Scene of the Prologue to the opera. 
(The Prologue is taken up entirely by a Bank Holiday Carnival on Hampstead Heath.) The wild horsemen are suggested by the various rings of hobby-horses moving in opposite directions, whose colours, white and gold, flash in the gaudily coloured decorations and brilliant lights.
