Few countries can show such a wealth of folksong as Great Britain, both as regards quality and variety. A large amount of it, however, might have easily been lost for ever were it not for the painstaking researches of the late Cecil Sharp and other scholars and specialists, who carried out their work with scrupulous care and wholehearted enthusiasm. Of contemporary folksong experts Dr. Vaughan Williams is certainly the most important, and the use he has made of many fine folk tunes in his own music, particularly as regards his arrangements of songs, is of great and lasting value. E. J. Moeran has also done some valuable work as a collector of Norfolk folk-songs, a number of which he has used as a basis for his own compositions.

For beautiful string tone and brilliance of execution the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra cannot be surpassed. It was founded in 1842, and in 1860 became a permanent organisation, eventually, in 1870, giving all its concerts in the now building of the Society of Music Friends. Among the great conductors who have guided this famous orchestra's career are Otto Dessoff , Richter, Mahler, Schalk, Nikisch, Strauss, nnd Weingartner. In view of the much-discussed problem of whether one country's music can be satisfactorily interpreted by musicians of another country, it will therefore be particularly interesting to hear Elgar's Introduction and Allegro and Hoist's Ballet Music from The Perfect Fool played by a Viennese orchestra under a British conductor.
