The performance of Buxtehude's Prelude and Fugue in G minor is of special interest since it brings before us the name of that great organist whom Bach walked 200 miles to hear. Dietrich Buxtehude was born in Sweden in 1637 and died at Liibeek in 1707. In 1668 he was appointed organist at the Marienkirche of Lubeck, and it was not long before his brilliant gifts both as an organist and composer attracted a great number of young musicians around him, and he became the centre of a renowned musical circle. Buxtehude instituted a series of ' evening performances ' in connection with his church services consisting of programmes of sacred music for orchestra, chorus and organ. These continued until the end of the nineteenth century, and in the seventeenth century secured tho town of Lubeck European fame.
