An appeal on behalf of THE HOSTELS FOR 
CRIPPLED WOMEN WORKERS by H. BROUGH-ROBERTSON 
In 1912 the first Hostel for Crippled and Invalid Women Workers was opened in Love Walk, Camberwell. The work grew to such an extent that a new house had to be taken in Denmark Hill and still another in Champion Hill, there being today a little colony in Camberwell. The hostels have become famous for the production of beautiful needlework. 
The objects of the hostels are threefold: to give crippled girls a training that will lead to partial or complete independence ; to enable crippled women needing a permanent home to earn part of the cost of maintenance ; and to provide a home where women whose physical condition makes wage-earning impossible can live useful lives under constant medical care.

Tone Poem, The Ship o' the Fiend...MacCunn

Hamish MacCunn, the richly-gifted Scotsman whose death in 1916 was so heavy a loss to British music, was just twenty when this stirring piece appeared in 1888. Instinct with all that is most picturesque and vivid in the Scottish national idiom, it won an immediate success and has ever since been popular. The tale on which it is based is common to the folk lore of many lands. In Scott's version, which was MacCunn's inspiration, the Daemon Lover carries off a fair lady from her husband and two bonnie babes, on his ship whose 'masts were of the beaten gold'. But very soon she spies his cloven foot, and watches with horror as he grows to monstrous height. The music presents the whole impression of the ballad, rather than illustrates the course of the grim tale.

In Sicily, framed between Etna and the sea, Theocritus found scenes of idyllic life. On the hillside he encountered shepherds in a singing contest. In the faint blue of a summer dawn, through the fens to the shore he reached the wattled cabin of two old fishermen. In Syracuse and other towns by the coast he heard the chatter of Dorian women.
