What is the truth about a tramp's life in this country? Is it possible for a man to roam the countryside for months on end doing little or nothing to earn a living? Is there any justification for regarding a vagrant as rather a romantic character? And are people on the whole charitable to those who beg from them or try to sell them things they don't want? Interesting answers to these questions will be supplied in the six talks to be given by an ex-tramp who now prefers to remain anonymous because he has written ? book and does not want to make capital out of his bitter experience on the road. Today listeners will hear the first of the series, and the speaker will explain the circumstances that led him to adopt a nomadic existence for over eighteen months, and will describe his first experiences on the road when he was dependent on the generosity of others for a bed and food.
