An Organ Recital

Thomas Adams , whose Overture in C opens this programme, held various positions as organist at churches in South London in the early part of last 
'century. He was a most successful recital organist and was even called the Thalberg of the Organ. He had a great gift of extemporising, but his fame very largely rested on his performances on a strange instrument called the Apollonicon, a combined solo instrument and barrel organ. 
Many of its features, such as the detached console and stops to imitate orchestral instruments, appear to have anticipated the modern cinema organ. Dr Charles Wood held the Chair of Music in the University of Cambridge when he died in 1926. He was also Professor of Composition at the Royal College of Music. He wrote a number of works, many of them for chorus and orchestra, which had success He wrote, too, for the organ, and among his compositions is a collection of Irish folk-songs. The best-known of his songs is perhaps his setting of Walt Whitman 's Ethiopia Saluting the Colours'. 
Joseph Bonnet , a pupil of Guilmant, and a fine player, has also toured 
England as an organ recitahst. He was born in 1884. Felix Alexandre Guilmant was one of the most distinguished organists of the nineteenth century. He gave recitals in Europe and America, touring 
England on several occasions.
