The old and favourite song ' Drink to me only with thine eyes ' is a setting of words by Ben Jonson to be found in a poem inscribed ' To Celia ', published in 1616. Naturally, they were set over and over again even in the seventeenth century, but none of the early settings has survived, and all, both of earlier and later date, have been eclipsed by the really beautiful one we all know, first heard of in published form in 1774. From the very first it was popular ; 
Fanny Burney mentions in her diary having heard it sung by two daughters of the Dean of Winchester ; in her opinion it was a ' very pretty little old song' The controversy over who composed it has cropped up at various times, but though it is always referred to as ' 'traditional' in origin, recent research has practically established that it was by Dr. Henry Hanngton , of Bath. This gentleman was not a Doctor of Music but of Medicine, though as a keen amateur he often composed for the Harmonic Society of Bath. His effort is so charming that one wonders whether other settings of his will ever come to light.
