and His Famous Company of Barnstormers in the Classic Melodrama 
' Sweeney Todd ' 
THIS OLD-TIME melodrama was presented by Tod Slaughter at the Elephant and Castle Theatre in 1928, and revived by him at the Kingsway for the Christmas season of 1932. Many of the cast of those productions will be included in tonight's broadcast. 
It is the fashion nowadays to play these old dramas for their comedy, and this, as both the stage and radio revival of The Streets of London showed, is an amusing and legitimate treatment. But Tod Slaughter always plays these melodramas for all that they are dramatically worth, and the vigour and straightforwardness of his style make for refreshingly strong entertainment in these days of intimate acting. Thus, Sweeney Todd will not be played as burlesque, but as straightforward, full-blooded melodrama. The incidental music that does so much to heighten the atmosphere and tension will be given full scope. 
Tonight's presentation should please both those who affect to find the strong methods ' amusing', and the large number of play-listeners who still have a warm corner in their hearts for the forthright honest alarums and excursions of real old-fashioned melodrama.
