JOAN COXON (soprano) RAMEAU'S FIRST really important work for the stage was Hippolyte et Aricie, the libretto of which was founded on Racine's Phedre. The Abbe Pellegrin, who adapted the text, had his doubts about the talent of a composer, who, though already fifty years old, was -scarcely known at all, and demanded from Rameau a bill for 500 livres as security against the failure of the opera. The Abb6 attended the first performance with the bill in his hand ready to present it at the conclusion of the show. So pleased was he, however, with the music that he tore up the bill immediately the curtain was down on the first act. If it had been left to the public, 
Rameau's path would have been easy, but he had the professors and the performers against him. Only one of his colleagues, Campra, had the courage to defend him. ' There is enough stuff in Hippolyte and Aricie ', he said, ' for ten operas. This man will eclipse us all '. Campra was right; Rameau died, mourned by both the public and the Court, the greatest musician in France.
