Percy Grainger was born at Brighton, near 
Melbourne in Australia, fifty years ago. Ho gave pianoforte recitals as a boy and accumulated enough money to travel to Germany and study there. His British colleagues in Germany included Balfour Gardiner , Norman O'Neill , Cyril Scott , and Roger Quilter. In 1900 ho came to London and was known to the British public as a pianist of great brilliance for the next fifteen years. Then he went to America and has since returned only as a visitor from the States, where lie has made his home. 
As a composer, Grainger has concentrate! on a certain type of music—the folk-song element dressed for to-day and embroidered in a very individual manner. His Mock Morris, Shepherd's Hey, and Molly on the Shore have been played  all over the world, and are very delightful examples of what can be done with folk material by a musician who treats it as ruthlessly and as brilliantly as Grainger does. His sense of rhythm, his grasp of orchestral colour, and his  power of effecting a climax-big words, but not too big for an apt description— are shown to be, in the small compass of his shorter pieces, as  important and as strongly handled as if symphonic proportions had been his object. Graingor has composed actually very little ; one wishes he had done much more. He has effected nothing that has not been interesting nor well done.
