'The Piper'

A Lyric Drama in One Act by HERBERT FERRERS
Suggested by and founded upon Robert Browning's 'Pied Piper of Hamelin'

Rats! Hamelin Town is infested with them!
Exasperated citizens come clamouring to the Town Hall, calling upon the Mayor to exterminate the vermin. His Worship condescends to appear, and a volley of abuse drives him indoors to rack his brains for a remedy.
Enter the Piper, a mysterious stranger from the land beyond the veil, whose music is only heard by the chosen few, but whose call all must follow at last.
A Lame Boy, attracted by the sound of the pipe, questions the stranger. What is his name! His nationality? 'Sleep and I are sister and brother,' says the Piper. 'He dwells in a Paradise "where the lame shall walk and the blind shall see."' 'Take me there! ' cries the Boy. The stranger points out that his widowed mother could ill spare her only child. He promises, however, that all his life the Boy shall hear ethereal melodies, conjuring up glimpses of Elysium.
When the Piper encounters the Mayor he offers to rid the town of rats for the sum of a thousand guilders. His Worship accepts the conditions. The entire rat colony is lured to destruction. His Worship withholds the reward.
Retribution follows. The stranger pipes a tune that draws to him all the children in the city. Struck dumb and motionless, the townsfolk watch their sons and daughters dancing merrily round the Market Square, out of the town, out of sight, into the unknown. Only the Lame Boy is left behind; but he still hears the Piper's music, and he sees a vision of the dream country, where the lost children have found eternal happiness.
'But God has a few of us whom' He whispers in the ear;
The rest may reason and welcome ! 'tis we musicians know.'
