Socrates, that wise philosopher of Ancient
Greece, was accused of corrupting the Athenian youth b'y his teaching, of making innovations in the religion of the Greeks, and of ridiculing tho gods of the Athenians. His real crime was too great freedom of thought; he died because he would not be false to his beliefs. The story of his end, as told in the words of Plato, is as moving a's anything in literature. Mr. Watkins, who broadcast his reading of this passage with great effect in October, 1929, begins with the conclusion of Socrates' speech in court after the judge had condemned him to death, and continues with the story of his last moments in prison as related by Phsedo.
