Burlesque, experience proves, makes for good broadcasting. Listeners will remember the Baddeley-Mackenzie-Leigh success Pride of the Regiment and the amusing absurdities of Only a Mill Girl and Beaten at the Post by the two brothers responsible for tonight's show. They turn from skitting the Nat Gould racing tale and the sentimental novelette to find the chinks in the armour of Ruritania. The King's Double makes genial fun of those innumerable romances that delight in ' somewhere in Central Europe ' as a setting. It tells of ' Viennese nights and Parisian lights ' and ' of wine redder than the usual red ' in a land where no one ever goes to bed. The burlesque is delightfully realised in the book and the music, and V. C. Clinton-Baddeley , Eric Anderson , Ronald Hill and Violet Marquesifa , prominent in the cast, have the right knack of putting over this kind of agreeable nonsense.

Alban Berg, an Austrian composer forty-seven years old, and the most gifted of the pupils of Arnold Schonberg , his only master, lives quietly in Vienna, composing, teaching, and writing. The Lyric Suite was composed in 1926. It is written, not in the orthodox symphonic form, but most informally as befits the lyrical character of the various movements, aptly indicated in the tempo markings. The first movement, which is not to be heard to night, is joyful, the second, Andante amoroso, with which the broadcast opens, is tender; the third, Allegro misterioso, gives the idea of repressed expression, with violent outbreaks in the Trio Estatico. The climax of lyricism is reached in the Adagio appassionato, which concludes the present performance. The remaining movements, the Presto turns away from ecstasy, and the final Largo dies away in inconsolable despair.

This is essentially chamber music, and is intended for performance in intimate surroundings. There are three movements: The first is Thema scherzoso con Variazioni for Pianoforte and Wind Ensemble; the second, Adagio for Violin and Wind Ensemble; and the last, Rondo rhythmico con Introduzione, which has the sub-title Cadenza, for Pianoforte, Violin and Wind Ensemble.
