The gulf that lies between Schubert's treatment of the string quartet up to his twentieth year, and this fragment written when he was twenty-three, is very wide. In this movement he used the form as a medium of profound and personal expression, and it is as though he were trying to curb the tumult of the senses into which his oppressive experiences have hurled him, and achieving at the end resignation, but not peace.
