by Louis MacNeice with John Phillips , Carleton Hobba
Francis de Wolff
Allan McClelland
Originally broadcast in March 1947 in a production by the author, The Burning of Nial is the second of two programmes made by Mr. MacNeice from the Icelandic Rial's Saga. His earlier programme took events to the murder of Njal's friend Gunnar in A.D. 990. In this programme the story is continued through years of hard living and dying to the most famous crime in Icelandic history-the burning of Njal in his homestead by a band of enemies led by the chieftain Flosi-to the vengeance taken by Njal's son-in-law Kari and to the eventual reconciliation of Flosi and Kari in A.D. 1016 which ends the saga.
