A dramatic interlude written for broadcasting by T. W. H. HOLLAND
The sixteenth century was a time of great contrasts, in learning as in other matters. Many schools were built, but still more were destroyed ; yet all the time a great change was taking place which was to affect English schools for centuries. This afternoon listeners are to hear something of an Elizabethan school, of what went on inside it, and of the people who attended it.

Brahms's ' Tragic ' Overture, which was written shortly after the ' Academic Festival ' Overture, was completed in the summer of 1880. In the following January, on the occasion of Brahms receiving the honorary doctor's degree from the Breslau University, the Breslau Orchestral Society gave the first performance of these two new overtures.
In a letter to his publisher Brahms told him about a ' very merry Academic Festival Overture, with Gaudeamus and all sorts of things ; ... Having been given this opportunity I could not forbear to satisfy my melancholy disposition by writing an overture for a tragedy as well.' However, this very powerful and dramatic overture has no programme other than the expression of the mood that the title suggests.

Ⓓ 'A Woman Looks at Cruft's '

This afternoon Mrs. Rothwell
Fielding is to talk about the famous Cruft's Show, as she did last year. Except for the war period it has been an annual event in the dog world since 1886. This year's show opened yesterday at the Royal Agricultural Hall, Islington, and closes tonight.
Mrs. Rothwell Fielding has judged dogs both in Australia and over here, and has been breeding them for over twenty years. Among the breeds in which she has specialised are Chows, Cavalier King Charles spaniels, and Afghans. About ten years ago she introduced an Afghan hound into her kennels, and since then she has devoted most of her time to this interesting breed. The winners she has bred and shown are too numerous to mention, but pride of place goes, perhaps to ' Nimrod of Kuranda ' as a winner, while she also possesses that outstanding stud dog ' Kulli Khan '. By profession she is an artist, and specialises in animal portraiture.

(First Performance)
Haydn Wood, one of our most prolific composers of light orchestral music, says of his charming new overture: It is based on two themes, the first of a vigorous, energetic nature representing Life, and the second symbolic of Love. The development section immediately following the love scene is labelled Scherzando and shows the composer's happy outlook on all that Life and Love should be. The overture ends on a joyous and triumphant note.'
