Though bearing a late opus-number, Mendelssohn's so-called 'Trumpet Overture' is an early work - earlier even than that to A Midsummer Night's Dream - dating from the autumn of 1825, when the composer was only sixteen. It was first performed at a concert in Berlin on November 2 of that year, when the young composer also played the piano part in Beethoven's Choral Fantasia.
The overture was a special favourite of the composer's father, who said he would like to hear it when the time came for him to die. It long remained in manuscript-the Royal Philharmonic library contains a copy with corrections made by the composer - and was not published until many years after Mendelssohn's death.

Charles the Great was Emperor of the Franks, and Roland was a famous warrior. The story this afternoon is one which the people of the Middle Ages loved to hear when they sat feasting in the great halls of their castles.

In Britain there used to be wild boars, lynxes, bears, and reindeer. They lived in the forests that covered most of the country. These animals have disappeared because there are no longer any large forests. The forests have been used for building and for firewood, while sheep and rabbits have eaten the young trees. Rabbits taken to Australia have done immense harm by eating grass.which should have fed sheep. Stoats taken to Australia to kill the rabbits killed
Australian animals instead. English birds taken to New Zealand have become pests there. This is an outline of the talk that Dr. Munro Fox is to give todas'.

The production of Der Freischutz in Berlin on June 18, 1821, marked the birth of romantic opera. Wagner described Weber's masterpiece as the focus of the expression of all German patriotic feeling in the period following the War of Liberation against Napoleon. The overture perfectly sums up the opera, both musically and in general feeling. The magic music of the four horns at the beginning, the restless syncopations that follow, the lovely clarinet melody a little later, and the fire of the triumphant conclusion are unforgettable.

Max Reger was a modem disciple of Bach, and in his works something of the style of Bach is revealed. He found his most congenial mediums of expression in chamber and organ music, though he composed in every form. His music is often characterised by facile fluency, often akin to improvisation, but in his higher flights he attained the level of a real master. His counterpoint, always scholarly, is sometimes rather ornate ; his themes sometimes imitative, are nevertheless strong, and his workmanship is always that of a - consummate musician.
