If the people seem reluctant to follow the Church, the Church's counter-move must be to follow the people ; and this is a greater task today than ever, with new housing estates springing up on the outskirts of every town. Are the Churches grasping the opportunity offered, to lay a spiritual foundation for this new communal life, and to make the Church the centre of religious, social, and recreative effort ? The Rev. Ashley Turner is striving to answer this question successfully in one of the most important new housing areas near London, and Howard Marshall will report what he saw and heard on a visit to Dagenham.

During his youth and early manhood
Beethoven devoted considerable attention to wind music, some of the best examples of which were broadcast in a series of special recitals a fortnight ago. Among these was the Rondino in E flat, which listeners will again have an opportunity of hearing this evening. As its title would suggest, it is not intended to be a profound piece of music, but just a gay and swift-moving little work to amu'se rather than to stimulate the mind and the deeper emotions.

An appeal on behalf of THE BRITISH SOCIAL HYGIENE
COUNCIL by JOHN HILTON
This Council promotes the application of modern knowledge to social problems. It co-operates with the Health Authorities in fighting social disease. Trained lecturers, special films, and literature, are used. The work extends throughout the Empire.
A sum of £10,000 is required every year in voluntary funds to meet demands for help from parents, young people, youth leaders, and social workers. The special needs of seafarers, migrants, and transport workers have also to be met. It is the officially recognised social-hygiene organisation for giving instruction and for promoting this essential work, which is commended by every religious organisation.

Not until Schubert was twenty-five years of age did he turn seriously to chamber and orchestral music as a medium for expressing deep emotions in the way that he had always done in his songs, and imbuing such music - with what one might term dramatic values. The ' Unfinished ' Symphony was the beginning, and the great posthumous String Quartet in G major the end. The Octet in F major (written during February-March, 1824) is in spirit a peculiar mixture of the composer's earlier lightheartedness and later seriousness of outlook, which at times verged on the tragic.
Schubert was in a very low state of health when he composed the Octet: he was suffering from anaemia, giddiness, and nervous weakness, which were aggravated, by poverty and worry. The Octet was commissioned by an amateur clarinettist, Count Ferdinand von Troyer, chief officer of the household to the Archduke Rudolph , who was Beethoven's patron.
