Conducted by Sir HENRY J. WOOD John Ireland, who comes of a literary family, was born at Bowden, Cheshire, in 1879. He studied for eight years at the Royal College of Music under Sir Charles Stanford. After he left the College at the age of twenty-two he gradually asserted himself as one of the leading and most individual composers of the younger British school.
Ireland's Overture, originally written for brass band, is based on a musical version of the word ' Piccadilly ' and was suggested to the composer on hearing a 'bus conductor calling out the word with varying intensity for the information of his passengers. Pianoforte Solos
