FRANK GORDON (bass-baritone) In an article in THE RADIO TIMES on Byrd's ' My Ladye Nevells Booke
Hilda Andrews , an authority on this collection of virginal pieces, says : It was the product of an age when keyboard music took root, and flowered into a sudden brilliance, heralding Bach, Beethoven, and all the great piano music of the last century. Lady Nevell's pieces were written for the "virginal, the harpsichord's tiny predecessor, and they can be called the first piano music in the world.' The manuscript is now in the possession of Lord Henry Nevill at Eridge Castle, Sussex. When Johann Strauss wrote his waltz
' Die Tanzerin Fanny Elssler ', besides inventing an excellent title, he paid a very graceful compliment to the celebrated Viennese dancer (1810-1884). In her recollections Fanny Kemble , the actress, said that Elssler ' was the most intellectual dancer I have ever seen. Inferior to Taglioni in lightness, grace and sentiment; to Carlotta Grisi in the two latter qualities ; and with less mere vigour than Cerito, she excelled them all in dramatic expression, and .. , exhibited tragic powers of a very high order

A difference of opinion on machinery in motion and MABEL CONSTANDUROS in or near the Show Ring
This is the last day but one of the Royal Show which has held the stage at Bristol since Tuesday and closes tomorrow night. It is a great event in the West Country and of importance to live-stock breeders and dairy farmers throughout Great Britain.
On Thursday Western listeners heard a good deal about the show from various people who had visited it; tonight it is to have a larger audience, and they are to be taken to the Show Ground itself.
A. W. Ling , who broadcasts regularly to ' Western Farmers in particular ', is to speak from the working dairy ; A. G. Street , who farms in Wiltshire and is famous throughout the land for his novels ' Farmer's Glorv' and ' Strawberry Roan ', will speak from the cattle lines ; and Mabel Constanduras , Mrs. Buggins, with her sense of humour and sense of character, will sketch the lighter side of the Show as seen in or near the Show Ring.
There should be laughter as well as much to learn tonight.

It is difficult to say who was the first composer to be inspired by the paintings of the Swiss artist Arnold Bocklin (1827-1901). Edwin Evans has suggested that Heinrich Schulz-Neuthen (1838-191 5) was first in the field with h;, symphonic poem based on Böcklin's 'The Island of Death '. Max Reger ', 'Four Tone Poems after Böcklin' includes a dramatic interpretation u ' The Island of Death ' which, though shorter than Rachmaninov's symphonic poem, captures the atmosphere of th picture with great sympathy and under standing.
This interesting work of Max Reger shows a side of his art that is scarcely known in England. Falla's ' The Three-Cornered Hat
The Three-Cornered Hat is founded on a Spanish story in which a pompou corregidor seeks to seduce a miller': virtuous wife, only to meet with defea at the hands of the lady and her watchful spouse. In the first of the three Dances it is the eve of St. John's Festival, and the miller's neighbours have gathered about his house to dance. while the wine cup passes round. The second number is danced by the miller himself, and the music presents an unmistakable picture of his sturdy figure.
At the opening of the third dance all is confusion ; several themes are intricately woven together, and two rhythms are heard together. The dance itself is a brilliant Jota-one of the oldest and most popular traditiona' dance forms of Northern Spain.
