A musical play by Henrik Ege is something of an event, for he is famous for the number of musical successes he has adapted for the microphone-they include Chu Chin Chow , The Desert Song, No, No, Nanette, Frederica, Shoic Boat , and Bitter Sweet. He introduces The Silver Spoon in ' Background to the Broadcast' on page 3.
The comedy (it is almost a farce) has to do with the adventures of a wealthy stockbroker who, unknown to his wife, comes into possession of a derelict night club which he is trying to turn into a success. As one expedient he tries to lure away a popular singer from a rival club, ' The Silver Spoon '.
The stockbroker, Herbert Boydell , is to be played by Davy Burnaby , of' The Follies ', Gaiety, and broadcast fame, and the part of his wife will be taken by Margaret Yarde ,, who is so good at portraying a domineering type of woman. Listeners will remember that she broadcast in Show Boat.
' The Silver Spoon ' will be broadcast in the Regional programme tomorrow at 8.0

Elgar has told us that this piece owes its inception to a tune which he once heard sung in the distance, when he was on holiday in Wales-a tune that impressed him particularly -by its cadence of a falling third. From it he evolved the main theme, sufficiently like a Welsh tune to be. taken for real folk music. Later, another song heard in the Wye valley confirmed the first impression, and the work was carried to completion. It appeared in March, 1905, at the same time as the third ' Pomp and Circumstance ' March.
It has been said of this Octet, one of the finest of Mendelssohn's chamber music pieces, that it is much more a symphony scored for a string orchestra than true chamber music. Indeed, Mendelssohn appears to have anticipated this criticism, for he desired that the Octet should be played in symphonic style. The Scherzo, the third movement in the Octet was re-scored for orchestra by the composer himself for a concert of the Royal Philharmonic Society in London, which he conducted in 1829. This graceful little movement is, according to the composer, an attempt at a description of the Walpurgis Night in Goethe's Faust.

When Wolf decided to set a poem he first saturated himself with the meaning and spirit of the verse, almost experiencing a form of hypnotic suggestion. So wholly was he possessed by a fancied poem that, with little or no thought of composition, the music would come to him while he slept, and in the morning the song would pass from his pen to, paper rapidly, unerringly, and in its complete and final shape.
