Frank Mannheimer 's first visit to Europe was in the ranks of the American Army during the War. It was at the very outset of his career that music had thus to be laid aside, but he was fortunately able to return to it, and when he next came from the United States he had already a firmly established place of his own as a concert pianist. In the last few years he has often played in London, as well as in Berlin and many other European cities, and has shown himself to be an artist of power and subtlety. He . was chosen as the representative American pianist to join the Brosa Quartet in Bloch's Quintet at the International Festival at Siena, in 1928, and has since appeared in England on several occasions in recitals of American music.
Although Frank Mannheimer 's name is usually associated with contemporary music, he is no less a sympathetic interpreter of the classics. This evening he is giving us an opportunity to hear an early English sonata by Dr. Thomas Augustine Arne, who was one of the leading British composers of the early eighteenth century (which was not a very flourishing time for our native music).
Dr. Ame was a personal friend of Handel, who was twenty-five years his senior and thought a great deal of him. It was of Arne's famous tune ' Rule, Britannia ! ' that Wagner, many years later, said, ' the first eight notes contain the whole character of the British people
Arne could invent other good tunes, as his still popular songs attest, and as we may gather also from the Sonata in G minor, which, however, is not one of the fully-developed Mozart or Beethoven type, but on the earlier, simpler pattern.

Miss Arnot Robertson was barely twenty-five when her first book, ' Cullum ', was published in 1928. Since then she has published ' Three Came Unarmed ', ' Four Frightened People' (both of which have been filmed) and ' Ordinary Families', ', and her reputation as a serious novelist is now firmly established.
As readers of ' Ordinary Families' must have guessed, Miss Arnot Robert son is a keen sailor. She is most at home in trousers, a weather-worn oil-skin and a battered felt hat (male variety), and she married a fellowyachtsman, M. E. Turner , of the Empire Press Union.
She says she writes only because ' neither sailing nor marriage is a whole-time occupation for any intelligent woman'. As a novelist, it has been caid that 'she and passionate and honest and completely disillusioned, and she handles all sacred things with a ruthlessness that robs them of any sham
Listeners may confidently look forward to a stimulating and provocative half-hour with this tall, slender, redhaired yachtswoman.

Arnold Bax 's Ballad for violin and piano was written in 1916 and the ' energetic and tempestuous ' opening reflects the general mood-background of the war period. A typically Baxian lyrical melody gives relief later. The piece is dedicated to Winifred Small , who is playing it this evening.

The Caldecott Community exists for the care of children from abnormal and broken homes. A normal home should be the birthright of every child, and without it no child can count on either security or happiness. Unfortunately, under modern civilisation, thousands of such homes exist today. The Community is open to the children from these homes. They come from all classes of society, their misfortune and poverty alone making them eligible.
The Community has no endowment and little financial support. The small weekly payments made by the parents or guardians themselves can only meet a fraction of the cost of upkeep.
