Orchestral music at Harrogate dates from 1888 when a wind band of twenty-one musicians was formed for the purpose of playing to the early morning water drinkers. J. Sidney Jones , musical director of the Grand Theatre, Leeds, and bandmaster of the Leeds Rifles, was appointed conductor. It is interesting to note that he brought with him as deputy conductor and E flat clarinet his son, Sidney, who later became famous as the composer of The Geisha.
In 1893 the Harrogate Corporation decided to take over the entire control of the band, and J. Sidney Jones was appointed Musical Director, a post that he held until 1903, when C. L. Naylor succeeded him.
In 1898 owing to the opening of the Royal Spa Concert Rooms under the auspices of the Corporation, an orchestra as well as a wind band was demanded. The personnel was increased to forty-two players, many of whom played both wind and string instruments. In the following year a series of Wednesday morning Symphony Concerts was introduced with unexpected success.
In 1900 Coleridge-Taylor, Parry,
Mackenzie, Elgar, Sir Frederick Cowen , Sir Edward German , and Hamish MacCunn were invited to conduct special programmes of their own works.
The present century has seen Harrogate become an important provincial musical centre under the successive leadership of C. L. Naylor , Julian Clifford , Howard Carr , Basil Cameron (who is now conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra), and the present director, Louis Cohen.

Domenico Cimarosa was one of the most important operatic composers of his day, yet the only one of his operas that is still performed is // matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage). Diaghilev contributed to the revival of interest in his other works some years ago with the ballet Le astuzie feminili, the music of which was drawn from the compositions of Cimarosa. The present work, ' La Cimarosiana ', an arrangement of certain symphonic fragments of Cimarosa, was without doubt a labour of love by the eminent Italian composer Malipiero.

David Herbert Lawrence was the son of a Nottinghamshire coal-miner. Born at Eastwood in 1885, he won a board school scholarship and was educated at Nottingham High School and University College. He became first a clerk, then a schoolmaster, and his earliest books were history textbooks published under the pseudonym ' Lawrence H. Davidson '.
Lawrence's first novel, The
White Peacock ', came out in 191 and won immediate recognition in critical circles. Its successors established his reputation, but it was not until the police suppressed ' The Rainbow ' in 1915, on a charge of obscenity, that the general public took much notice of him. From then till his death in 1930-and since -his fame has had to battle against his notoriety.
' The Rocking Horse Winner', published posthumously in a volume of short stories, ' The Lovely Lady ', if not one of Lawrence's most characteristic pieces of work, is a little master-piece, refreshingly free from Lawrence's more dreary obsessions.
