The Ancient Airs and Dances upon which Respighi's two orchestra! suites are based were originally written for the lute. A master of the art of orchestration, Respighi has scored the music with appropriate simplicity, and the original harmonic style has been more or less faithfully retained.
The first number of the Second Suite consists of three dances by Fahrizio Carosio , the author of one of the oldest books on dancing, who was born about the year 1531 and lived to be over seventy-four. First comes a ' Ballet with Galliard ' in honour of Christena Lorena de Medici , Grand Duchess of Tuscany, then a Salterello and Canarie, the latter a lively jig, favoured at the time of Louis XIV.
The second number,' Pastoral Dance', is a graceful and flowing old French dance by Johann Baptist Besardo , who was a famous lutenist, probably born in 1567. The third number consists of two tunes, one by an unknown composer, born about 1600, and the other by Mersenne Marin, born in 1636, The first tune is entitled ' The Bells of Paris ' and the second is a slow and expressive aria.
The fourth number is a lively old
Italian dance by Bernardo Gianon celli, who lived between the end of the fifteenth century and the first half of the sixteenth century.
