When the eight-year-old Mozart was brought to London in 1764 and exhibited as ' a prodigy of nature ', his father astutely had six of the boy's sonatas for violin and harpsichord printed at his own expense and dedicated them to the Queen. Little Wolfgang had already made one or two appearances at Court and had captivated Queen Charlotte. Her Majesty now acknowledged the dedication of the sonatas (of which the F major is No. 4) by a gift of fifty guineas. Like most of Mozart's early violin sonatas, it is less a duet sonata than a keyboard work with ad lib violin part.
Brahms's Sonata in A is one of his most melodious and lyrical works. It was conceived while spending the summer of 1886 on Lake Thun. Brahms's friend, Widmann, wrote a little ballad on the music, describing the scenes that inspired the composer. The first verse freely translated runs : ' Where the Aar flows softly from the lake to the little town many beautiful trees cast their shadows. I lay deep in the long grass and slept, dreaming lovely dreams '.

The speaker tonight will describe what is surely the most curious and invaluable use to which the cine camera has been put-recording the growth of animal and plant tissues. Cells taken from the living animal can be kept alive in special media, and then growth and behaviour can be studied under high powers of the microscope. By means of the cine camera their activities can be transferred to the screen with most spectacular results.

The Lady ROCKLEY, C.B.E.
For forty years Lady Rockley has been a recognised authority on English gardening. Her first book, ' A History of Gardening in England ' (published in 1895 under her maiden name of the Hon. Alicia Amherst ) earned her the Freedom of the City of London. As the wife of Sir Evelyn Cecil (who became Lord Rockley last year) she has also published ' London Parks and Gardens ' (1907) and ' Wild Flowers of the Great Dominions of the British
Empire ' (1934).
Lady Rockley's talk this evening will be of great interest to the ever-increasing public who take the opportunity of visiting the large gardens of England during the summer months-and, indeed, to a!l lovers of gardens.
