'The Seven-a-Sides'
R. COVE-SMITH
A number of good things have come from Scotland, and Seven-a-Side Rugby football is undoubtedly one of them. It is a game so fast that the usual forty minutes each way has to be cut down to seven minutes each way; but, on the other hand, several matches may be played in one afternoon.
The game first came to England about nine years ago, and is now firmly established-in London, at any rate-as a wind-up item of the season, for charity. Middlesex County clubs were the first to be identified with it, and games are played annually for the Cancer Research Fund of the Middlesex Hospital.
R. Cove-Smith, who gives the talk this evening, was one of the finest forwards England ever had. He was a Cambridge Rugger Blue from 191 to 1921, captained Cambridge University in his last year, possesses twenty-nine International caps, and captained England in 1928-29. In 1925 he played in that great match against the All Blacks in which England were just beaten. But what makes his talk of particular interest is that he was captain of Middlesex County when the first Seven-a-Sides were staged at Twickenham under the auspices of the County Union.
