RONALD KAULBACK
AT the BEGINNING of last year Ronald Kaulback accompanied Captain F. Kingdom Ward , the well-known explorer and botanist, on an expedition into South-east Tibet. Reaching Sadiya, the last town in Assam, in March, they journeyed up the valley of the Lohit Brahmaputra , through the country of the surly Mishmi hillmen, into the Tibetan province of Zayul, arriving there after some three weeks of difficult travelling.
In Rima they were received with great hospitality by the Governor, and from then onwards made their way through a part of the country never before seen by Europeans. On the top of the Ata Kang La-the 16,000-foot-pass between Zayul and Nagongthe explorers were obliged to separate, Mr. Kaulback not having received permission to enter the latter province.
While Captain Kingdom Ward, therefore, continued northwards to Shiuden Gomba, their original objective, Mr. Kaulback's party made their way home through Burma, arriving at Fort Hertz, the farthest outpost, at the end of September. Ronald Kaulback will talk about his observations and experiences this morning.

CONSIDERING how short was Purcell's life-he died at the age of thirty-six-he has left us a great deal of wonderful music. He wrote principally for the church and the theatre ; such music as he composed outside these spheres was in the! nature of odes, welcome-songs and other occasional pieces, much in the manner of a musical equivalent of a poet laureate. He did, however, write some instrumental music, which is amongst the loveliest of its kind known to instrumental players, and some keyboard music. This consists of suites made up of dance tunes in the manner of the period, and a collection of lessons for the harpsichord. Had not Purcell been so occupied throughout his life with the church and the stage he would, without doubt, have further enriched the keyboard repertory.
