2.5 (-2.25) 'Round the Countryside'
Eric Parker: 'Return of the Migrants'
BROWNING'S wish to be in England in April must be understood by all Englishmen abroad, for one need not have the soul of a poet to picture English woods, starred with primroses, or to remember the thrill with which one heard the first cuckoo the first time.
It is mid-spring; the nests of the birds that spent their winter with us have their eggs, or even their young. But from now on, every day, this month or next, you have only to look to see a new visitor to fields or gardens ; for it is the time of the year for the return of the summer birds.
The whitethroat, with its repetitive song: the blackcap, with voice so sweet you can mistake it for a nightingale; the nightingale itself (now bird of the microphone); the fly-catcher, small, silent, and latest to return.
But, of course, the most familiar of all are the swallows. First comes the house-swallow, with its ruby bib ; next the sand-martin and the house-martin all white below the bill ; and last of all the swift. The swallow drinks while flying, and more than any other bird conjures up summer. Of these birds and others Eric Parker will talk to you this afternoon.
