Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A, which was composed for the clarinettist Anton Stadler , is one of the finest works written for the instrument, which at that time (1791) was a ' modern ' instrument. The writing exploits the wide compass and varied colour of the clarinet with brilliant and exquisite effect. Underneath the surface of this charming and melodious conorrto is the structure of a master-builder who did not put into it all his ingenuity and inspiration merely to tick e indolent ears.
