Joyce Grenfell actress writer and broadcaster recalls the war years 1939-1945 as the time of her life.
It was the time when she played in several of Herbert Farjeon 's revues: was welfare officer in a Canadian Red Cross hospital: and entertained the troops in Northern Ireland, Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and India.
Joyce Grenfell was playing in Noel Coward 's Sigh No More when the war ended; she introduces songs from this and other revues. and many of the popular songs of the time, as well as straight music and the voices of many well-remembered wartime broadcasters.

Archaeologists talk about their work in the field this summer
3: The Saxons are coming-but how?
The century after the Roman legions left Britain has left no reliable literary record. But recent excavations are providing new evidence which may eventually solve the mystery of what happened in Eastern England. Were the Saxons mercenaries who rebelled, invaders, or peaceful settlers? What happened to the Romano-Britons?
SONIA HAWKES and NOEL MYRES describe recent advances in our knowledge of this dark period.
