Dr. Hoskin recounts the situation as it involved a young man, John Couch Adams , in Cambridge; the Astronomer Royal at Greenwich; an astronomer, U. J. J. Le Verrier. in Paris; and J. G. Galle of Berlin, then in charge of the greatest telescope of the time.
