4: How the mill folk fared when the alarm sounded
The old miser, Squire Derriman , has shown Anne where his famous ' treasure box ' is hidden, terrified as he is that his braggart nephew Festus will try to steal it from him. Anne is reluctant to have such a secret to guard, for she has troubles enough. Festus is her avowed enemy already, and she has quarrelled with the good Trumpet Major; and at the very height comes the worst news of all-the alarm-beacon has been fired at last: Napoleon's army has landed in Bud-mouth Bay!
